Tech: Sliding House

He used curving bricks, glass and a black door to create the bizarre sight, which is sandwiched between two ordinary houses.

With its sliding front and exposed interior it’s a house that looks like it has suffered at the hands of a landslide or a tornado.

But this derelict building is in fact a unique piece of art.

Artist Alex Chinneck, 28, from London, transformed the property in Margate, Kent – empty for 11 years – to give the illusion that the frontage was sliding off into the street.

He tore the bricks and windows from the top storey, leaving its interior visible to passersby. He then constructed a fake facade using the curve materials onto a wooden frame which was propped up against the house.

The £100,000 project, called ‘From the knees of my nose to the belly of my toes’, began at the end of August.

Thanet District Council gave the artist permission to transform the disused house and exhibit it for a year. The building will then be renovated and put back into more typical use.

Mr Chinneck said: “I wanted to create something that captured humour, illusion and would be accessible to people from all types of different backgrounds. The response has been very positive.”
