5 Facts you probably did not know about Nelson Mandela


This is a list of 5 facts most people don’t know about the Nobel peace prize winner and south african President.

1. He lived up to his name:

Birth name = Rolihlahla.
In his tribe (Xhosa), the name means pulling the branch of a tree or trouble maker. The name Nelson was given to him his teacher on the first day of his Elementary school.

2. He was in a famous Hollywood movie(Spike lee film):

He played a part in the popular 1992 biopic ‘Malcom X’. He played a teacher reciting malcom X’s famous speech to a room full of soweto kids, but the pacifist Mandela would not say “by any means necessary”. So lee cut back on the footage.

3. There is a bird named after him:

2013, Scientists named a prehistoric woodpecker after him: Australopicus nelsonmandelia. In 1973, the physics Institute names a nuclear particle the ‘Mandela particle’.

4. He married a First lady

Graca Machel was married to Mozambique President Samora Machel. Her marriage to Mandela before his 80th Birthday made her the first lady of Two nations.

5. He was on the U.S terror. Watch List:

Mandela was not removed from the U.S terror List until 2008 at age 89. He and other members of the African National Congress were placed on it because of the militant fight against apartheid.
